How to Add Snow Tex and Glitter Paint to Your Winter Paintings

diy painting tips painting tutorial snow tex Dec 02, 2025

If your winter painting is begging for a little more, it might be time to add some snowy texture and a whole lot of sparkle! Snow Tex and glitter paint are like the hot cocoa and marshmallows of the painting world. They just belong together.

I’m so excited to share this technique with you today! We’ll learn how to create fluffy snow along your edges and add shimmering highlights that make your piece look downright enchanting. Are you ready to dive in?

What Is Snow Tex?

Snow Tex by DecoArt is basically instant winter. It’s thick, goopy, slightly grainy, and honestly feels a bit like frosting, but please don’t eat it though. With a quick stir, it becomes the perfect medium for creating fluffy snow right on your canvas or wooden cutouts.

You can grab it at most craft stores or online, and it’s incredibly fun to play with. I have to warn you though, it’s a bit addictive!

What You’ll Need

  • Snow Tex
  • Palette knife
  • Small paintbrush
  • Glitter paint (DecoArt Galaxy Glitter is amazing!)
  • Water
  • Paper towel

How to Apply Snow Tex

First you’re going to scoop up a smidge of Snow Tex on your palette knife. You can also use a plastic knife. You don’t need a ton of Snow Tex! Next, you’re going to apply it willy-nilly along the edges, think like you’re frosting a sugar cookie. If you accidentally get too much on there, grab a wet paintbrush and gently soften or wipe away the excess. Keep in mind that we aren’t making a blizzard, so you’ll want to leave some gaps to help your “snow” look more natural. Snow Tex dries quickly, so rinse your tools right away before they become permanent holiday decorations.

Fun Tip: If your project has 3D letters or chunky painted words, add a little snowy drip along the tops. It looks absolutely adorable!

Adding Glitter Paint for That Holiday Sparkle

Now that your snow is looking frosty, let’s add some twinkle! Glitter paint is the secret sauce for creating magical winter highlights. If you’ve ever added glitter to a project you know just how amazing it is to be able to use glitter paint with half the mess.

Wondering where to add the glitter? It’s best in areas that naturally catch light. Use a detail brush to dab glitter onto items like berries, snowflakes, scarves, cookies, basically anything that whispers, “I want to sparkle.”

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Snow Tex dries fast, so try to work quickly.

  • If you throw glitter everywhere, it’s okay. You’re an artist. It happens.

  • Personalize, experiment, and embrace the sparkle!

Final Thoughts

Adding Snow Tex and glitter paint to your winter paintings is like giving them a warm holiday hug. It’s simple, fun, and instantly transforms your artwork into something extra magical.

So grab your palette knife, dip into that glitter, and get ready to bring your winter pieces to life in the cutest, sparkliest way possible.
