Paint with Me: A Dreamy Summer Echinacea
Aug 08, 2025
Hello, sunshine! I’m so glad you’re here—because today, we’re diving into one of my favorite seasonal projects: a bright and dreamy echinacea flower that’s just bursting with summer vibes. In addition to getting the overview here, you can check it out on my YouTube channel.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through the full process of painting this sweet flower from start to finish. Whether you’re new to painting or just looking for a little creative time, this is the perfect way to relax, unwind, and let your imagination bloom.
First Things First: The Sketch
We start off nice and simple with a light pencil sketch of the flower—focusing on those signature drooping petals and tall, textural center cone. Don’t stress about perfection! This is just a gentle guide to keep things flowing as we paint.
Build a Beautiful Base
Next, we begin layering our colors. For the background, I like to keep it soft and airy with light washes of color. Think summer skies or garden glow—whatever feels right to you.
Then we move on to the base of the flower. Using a mix of pinks, magentas, and purples, we start filling in the petals with gentle, layered strokes. You’ll see the form begin to take shape, even in these early steps. This stage is all about playing with color and enjoying the process. Let your brush wander a bit and follow your instincts. The magic really happens in the layering—so take your time and have fun with it
Using a mix of green tones and small strokes, I gently brushed in the foliage, letting some areas feel soft and feathery while others pop with contrast. Don’t be afraid to let the leaves feel a bit whimsical! Nature isn’t perfect—and that’s the fun of painting it.
Then comes the background. I used layered washes of blue and white to create a soft, peaceful glow that gives the flower room to shine. You can go bold or keep it light—just let your brush lead you.
Final Touches That Make a Difference
The last step? Highlights and shadows. This is where the echinacea petals and center cone get their dimension. With just a few flicks of white, and a little extra depth in the shadows, you’ll be amazed how your piece transforms.
Don’t forget to breathe, relax, and have fun. There’s no wrong way to make art—you’re creating something beautiful just by showing up.
